Biography

I am a global health epidemiologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics at the University of British Columbia, and I lead the Global Health & Innovations theme at the BC Children's Hospital Research Institute. My training is in clinical pharmacy and epidemiology, and my research is conducted largely in partnership with institutions and investigators across East Africa.

My work concerns risk stratification in health systems where clinical resources are scarce and must be allocated deliberately. Methodologically it sits at the intersection of clinical epidemiology, prediction modeling, and digital health: deriving and externally validating prognostic models in prospective cohorts, embedding them in decision-support tools that are usable at the point of care, and evaluating their implementation and effect on outcomes. The applied focus of the past decade has been sepsis and post-discharge mortality in children — a period of substantial and under-recognized risk — and, more recently, mother–newborn dyads.

I also contribute to consensus work on pediatric sepsis definitions and risk stratification through the Pediatric Sepsis Definition Task Force and the WHO Pediatric Risk Stratification Working Group. I welcome enquiries from prospective graduate students and collaborators.

The Institute for Global Health acknowledges with gratitude, that we gather and operate on the unceded, traditional, and ancestral territory of the Coast Salish peoples — xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. First Nations who have nurtured and cared for the lands and waters around us for all time. We invite everyone to reflect on the traditional territories and land that they currently work and live on.
